Alex Rowell is the author of We Are Your Soldiers: How Gamal Abdel Nasser Remade the Arab World, a New York Times "Editors' Choice", and of Vintage Humour: The Islamic Wine Poetry of Abu Nuwas, named among the best of 2018 by the Evening Standard. Based between Lebanon and Scotland, Rowell has written for publications including the BBC, The Economist, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. A former long-term resident of the Middle East, fluent in Arabic, he contributed a chapter to Tears of Bacchus: A History of Wine in the Arab World, a collection of essays with a foreword by the bestselling wine writer Hugh Johnson.
