David Woodman is currently Fellow in Medieval History at Robinson College, Cambridge, where he is also Senior Tutor. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, with a degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic and remained at Trinity to complete a PhD which focused on a collection of legal documents from northern England. After his PhD, David was awarded a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellowship which he held concurrently with a Junior Research Fellowship at Robinson College, Cambridge.
Throughout his career David has combined specialist academic publications with writing addressed to a more general readership. He has written for History Today, Aspects of History and appeared on Tom Holland’s podcast, ‘Making History’. Most recently, he has completed a biography of Edward the Confessor for the ‘Penguin Monarchs’ series. He is currently writing a biography of King Æthelstan, The First King of England, for Princeton University Press.
