Edward Shawcross' book, The Last Emperor of Mexico: A Disaster in the New World was published by Faber & Faber in 2022.
Edward Shawcross studied ancient and modern history as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford and modern history as a postgraduate at University College London, where he was awarded a doctorate in 2016.
Edward specialised in nineteenth-century French imperialism in Latin America and a revised version of his thesis was published by CUP in 2018 as France, Mexico and Informal Empire in Latin America, 1820-1867. Equilibrium in the New World was also published as part of the Cambridge Imperial and Post-Colonial Studies Series.
He spent many months researching in the Archives nationales and the Archives diplomatiques du ministère des Affaires étrangères in Paris as well as the Archivo General de la Nación and the Archivo Histórico Genaro Estrada de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores in Mexico City, exploring the nineteenth-century history of France and Mexico and drawing on French and Spanish-language sources for his doctoral research.
In addition to academic history, Edward has run a bar on the Côte d’Azur in France and taught English in Seoul, Korea and Medellin, Colombia. He also helped set up Unreal City Audio, a company that designs and runs immersive historical walking tours of London that have been critically acclaimed in the national press. He currently lives in London.
