Elaine is Professor of Psychology and Affective Neuroscience at the
University of Oxford where she runs the Oxford Centre for Emotion and Affective
Neuroscience (OCEAN), which investigates how genes, environments and cognitive
biases conspire to produce resilience or emotional vulnerability. Elaine is a
passionate advocate for the accurate and engaging reporting of neuroscience and
psychology to the general public. In addition to her popular science book Rainy
Brain Sunny Brain published in 2012, and Switchcraft published in 2022, she has been involved with several TV
documentaries including working with BBC1 on a documentary on the health
effects of mobile phones; the genetics of optimism and wellbeing with the actor
Michael J. Fox for an ABC documentary; and a BBC2 Horizon programme where she
(successfully) shifted the presenter Michael Mosley’s brain from pessimistic to
optimistic.
