Neil is Distinguished Professor of Archaeology at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. A leading specialist in the Viking Age and the pre-Christian religions of the North, and in the historical archaeology of the Indo-Pacific region, his researches have taken him to more than 40 countries. Neil is a frequent contributor to international archaeological television and radio, and is the historical consultant for History Channel's Real Vikings documentaries, supporting their successful Vikings drama series..
From 2016-2025 he is directing Sweden's largest archaeological research project, The Viking Phenomenon,
leading an international team to explore the origins of this critical
period in world history. A second long-term project focuses on the
multicultural impact of World War II across the island communities of
the Pacific.
His critically acclaimed history of the Vikings, The Children of Ash and Elm, is published by Penguin Press/Allen Lane in the UK and Basic Books in the US.
