Patrick Joyce is regarded as one of the leading British social historians of his generation. His chief concerns have been the question of class and the nature of power in Britain from the 18th century onwards. He is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Manchester, and has held numerous visiting professorships and fellowships at other universities, including Trinity College Dublin, the University of Edinburgh, the European Research Institute in Florence, the London School of Economics, the University of California, Berkeley and San Diego, New York University, and the National University of Ireland, Galway.
